1988 - Edmonton Oilers trade Wayne Gretzky

There is little doubt that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player ever. His list of NHL records is beyond impressive. He helped establish a dynasty in Edmonton and was the key figure on some of the best NHL teams ever. But on this day in 1988, the era ended. Edmonton's cash strapped owner dealt Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings. The franchise has paid the price ever since.
